Wednesday 13 March 2024: Cheshire’s Oaklands School, renowned for its dedication to inclusivity and community spirit, is gearing up for its eighth consecutive Red Nose Day fundraiser with an awe-inspiring quadruple sporting challenge.

This year, all 165 pupils, aged 11-18, at Oaklands School for children with special educational needs will undertake an ambitious challenge, aiming to run seven marathons in seven days, swim the waters of Loch Ness, row the equivalent distance of the English Channel, and climb the heights of the Everest on a step machine.

Philip Poole, PE and Maths teacher who is spearheading the initiative, said: “Our Red Nose Day challenges bring us all together - we dress up, have fun, work together and it’s just a really positive event for the whole school."

Oaklands School has a longstanding tradition of supporting Red Nose Day, having raised £7,000 to date through various initiatives. This year, they have a fundraising goal of £1,000, with the challenge scheduled to take place from Monday 10 March to Friday 15 March.

In addition to the physical challenge, Philip Poole has written a children's book titled Willy the One Winged Penguin, a tale inspired by his students and centred on the theme of inclusivity. Proceeds from all book sales leading up to Red Nose Day will contribute to Oaklands' fundraising efforts.

Discussing his commitment to raising money for Red Nose Day, Philip Poole says: “I’ve always been passionate about Comic Relief since doing fundraisers at school myself. It’s a day where you can do something you love to help others, a day for making memories."

Samir Patel, CEO at Comic Relief comments: “We love hearing about the incredible things our generous supporters do to fundraise for Red Nose Day, and what the pupils at Oaklands School are taking on has completely blown us all away. I’m sure their extraordinary efforts will undoubtedly inspire others. Swimming in the Loch Ness at this time of the year will be a challenge in itself. I’d like to say the biggest thank you to Phillip and everyone taking part - good luck!"

Money raised for Red Nose Day could help to put food on plates and roofs over heads, keep little ones safe and help support families affected by conflict and climate change.

This year, Comic Relief is celebrating its heroic, change making fundraisers with The Nosey Awards. Featuring five categories, the awards are open to anyone that fundraised for Red Nose Day between 2021-2024. Entries close on 31 March. To enter visit www.comicrelief.com/Noseys

NOTES TO EDITORS

About Red Nose Day

Red Nose Day is back on Friday 15 March 2024!

It’s that time of year when incredible cake-bakers, joke-makers, telly-watchers, t shirt-wearers, Red Nose-buyers and laugh-til-you-cryers, do something to fight poverty through humour and fun, for communities here in the UK and around the world.

We know that when people come together, great things can happen. So, this March, Comic Relief is uniting the nation to Do Something Funny for Money. The money raised could help put food on plates and roofs over heads, keep little ones safe and help support families affected by conflict and climate change. Having a laugh can make a serious difference.

There are lots of ways to take part in Red Nose Day. To find out more, visit www.comicrelief.com/rednoseday or follow @comicrelief on social media.

Red Nose Day is an initiative of Comic Relief.
