Friday 21 March: THEY’VE DONE IT! BBC One Morning Live presenters Gethin Jones and Helen Skelton have completed their mammoth 24-hour challenge for Comic Relief. The dynamic duo finished their ‘Wheely Big Challenge’, raising £890,745 for Comic Relief’s Red Nose Day, funding vital projects that tackle poverty, injustice, conflict, and climate change in the UK and around the world. Gethin and Helen were cheered on by their Morning Live colleagues and a host of special guests including Kimberley Walsh, Dr Ranj, boyband Dear Alice, Bluey, and stars from The Traitors and Gladiators. The pair were kept in high spirits with video calls from the likes of Claudia Winkleman, Faye Tozer, Janette Manrara, Kevin Clifton, Sir Chris Hoy and Rick Astley. Fellow Comic Relief challengers Jamie Laing and Billy Monger also gave messages of support in the final hours of Gethin and Helen’s challenge. But most importantly, Gethin and Helen were joined by some of the incredible people behind the projects funded by Comic Relief, including Dingley’s Promise, who support children with special educational needs and disabilities, and The Brick, who tackle the root causes of poverty and homelessness and provide essential items to local communities. Gethin Jones says: “The total as it stands is £890,000. It’s been another ridiculous, brutal, exhausting, exhilarating, emotional experience and I think when people watch where the money goes to, it really hits people hard, and I’ll never underestimate or not appreciate the fact that times are hard but people still donated. To raise that money is fantastic and it’s such a privilege to do it on behalf of Comic Relief and hopefully we can change lives and maybe even save lives.” Helen Skelton says: “I feel dizzy from going around in a circle in a windowless room for 24 hours! But so overwhelmed from people joining in. Times are tough for people, so any donation is so overwhelming and we are very grateful.” Dr Ranj says: “I think the entire Morning Live family is immensely proud. We knew they were going to do well because they are such determined, caring and giving people. But to see the amount that they've raised is just phenomenal.” Gethin and Helen will be in the Red Nose Day studio to join in with the unmissable event. Watch live from 7pm on BBC One tonight.
