A host of sports stars have backed The Supporters Club’s #MyExtraTime campaign, which invites the public to try something new and pledge their extra time this Christmas to help local grassroots sports.
Rio Ferdinand, Graeme Swann, Robin Van Persie, Ben Kay and Gary McAllister have visited sports projects around the country to pledge their time and promote the volunteering drive.
Ferdinand tried his hand at rugby at a pupil referral unit in Tooting, whilst former Ashes winner Swann took part in boxing sessions in Bristol. Rugby star Kay took part in horse riding sessions in Yorkshire and former Scotland skipper McAllister joined street dance sessions in Glasgow. Robin Van Persie kicked off the campaign with an online pledge, and encouraged his fans to do the same.
The Supporters Club uses donations from BT Sport customers to invest in projects selected in partnership with Comic Relief. The initiative has raised over £3 million and has backed 24 charities and projects. When customers sign up to BT Sport, they are able to make a recurring £1, £3, or £5 monthly donation to The Supporters Club. BT and Comic Relief work closely together to allocate this money, with the aim of building a sustainable grant-making fund that will support projects which use sport as an enabler for social change.
