Today Sport Relief has announced that some of the money raised through this year’s Sport Relief fundraising campaign will go to help some of the poorest and most vulnerable people who’ve been badly affected by the floods which have wreaked havoc and caused major devastation throughout parts of the UK.
The announcement came as Sport Relief celebrity challenger, Davina McCall was forced, due to the floods, to take detours during her epic BT Sport Relief challenge that has seen her cycle, swim and run her way from Edinburgh to London this week.
Speaking two miles into her final journey, Davina said: “We’ve been in the middle of all these floods – cycling through flooded areas, we had to take a detour yesterday because of the floods, so Sport Relief is making some money available in flood affected areas for families experiencing hardship, because it just sort of felt right that we should.”
The recent unprecedented flooding and high winds have caused terrible hardship for many individuals and families. Whilst it has been inspiring to see the way in which local communities have pulled together to help each other, Sport Relief is aware that the recovery process will take a long time for many and that those who are older or vulnerable may need a little extra help to get back on their feet.
That’s why the charity has decided that, in these extraordinary circumstances, some of the cash raised through Sport Relief will be made available to help those without the means to repair their homes and replace essential items. Sport Relief is making these funds available through its existing UK funding partners to help those most vulnerable and who have been hit the hardest.
