There were lots of laughs in the Bake Off tent, as four more celebrities went head to head for The Great Sport Relief Bake Off.
Singer and actress, Kimberley Walsh; ex Labour politician, Ed Balls; writer and presenter, Victoria Coren Mitchell and sports commentator, Chris Kamara were put to the test as they tackled three challenges set by judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood.
For the Signature Challenge the bakers were asked to make 24 American style muffins. Chris and Victoria struggled to produce identical sized bakes and, after taking a bite of one of Victoria’s Bloody Mary flavoured muffins, Mary admitted: “I’m not really enjoying them”. However Paul was impressed that she had managed to capture the taste so well.
Jennifer Saunders hosted the programme and told the bakers that their Technical Challenge was to follow one of Paul’s recipes for Football Pies.
Kimberley was slightly worried by the challenge. “I would have been more comfortable with some fairy cakes or a Victoria sponge, but never mind,” she said.
Chris thought he might have an advantage, having eaten lots or pies at football matches over the years. Looking at his own creations after taking them from the oven, he said: “I have bought worse looking ones.”
Meanwhile, Victoria struggled with having to make football patterns on the top of the pies. “I do all of the cooking at home and my husband is grateful for the food put in front of him,” she said. “He doesn’t also demand that it also resembles the Taj Mahal!”
But she was then delighted to win the challenge.
For the Showstopper round the contestants were required to bake a three tiered cake, representing an extreme sport.
Ed, who revealed that he makes his children’s birthday cakes, opted to make a ski jump cake. Surveying his messy workstation he said: “You start off wanting to be tidy and then there comes a point where you lose it completely - and I have totally lost it.”
Victoria make a chocolate sea sponge – which ended up being a little too salty - and Chris opted for a body-boarding cake, which had the judges in fits of laughter over the decoration.
But it was Kimberley’s cake, which recreated he climb up Mt Kilimanjaro, for Sport Relief which really impress the judges and helped her to win the title of Star Baker.
During the episode viewers also saw Denise Lewis visit a project in Tyne and Wear where she met Hughie, who was diagnosed with dementia six years ago, and his wife Linda. Denise found out how money from Sport Relief helps to make a difference to the couple’s quality of life.
