Today, Comic Relief is announcing a new funding initiative centred on Women and Girls' Rights and supported through the Common Ground Initiative. The Common Ground Initiative(opens in new window) is co-funded by Comic Relief and the Department for International Development (DFID).
The Common Ground Initiative Women and Girls' Rights Innovation Fund will support innovative work increasing the voice, profile and leadership of young women in sub-Saharan Africa. We envisage organisations will do this by strengthening the capacity of African women’s rights organisations, civil society and others in the UK and Africa. We see this happening through partnerships in and between the UK and Africa, creative ways of engaging people with events and campaigns related to the voice, profile and leadership of women, and supporting innovation and the use of new and existing digital and mobile technologies.
Comic Relief will invite applications to the Common Ground Initiative Women and Girls' Rights Innovation Fund to support creative approaches to addressing priority issues of young African women. In addition, under this Innovation Fund we are particularly interested in the use of digital tech for social change; this could be adapting digital technology for communicating, networking and influencing or building women’s tech skills.
Applicants must be based in the UK with partners working in sub-Saharan Africa and UK organisations must have a majority African Diaspora Board. There is no minimum grant size but the maximum grant size available will be £12,500.
The application process will be one stage and we will be open to proposals from Tuesday 6th September 2016 up to midday on Monday 3rd October 2016. Final decisions will be given at the start of February 2017.
