ADFAM National
One of parents' biggest worry about family life is the risk to their children from drugs and alcohol and they feel ill equipped to deal with these issues, are uninformed about drug and alcohol culture and are unaware of where to turn for help. In addition between 250,000 and 350,000 children are effected by their parents substance use. Adfam is the leading national organisation working with, and for, families affected by drugs and alcohol. They provide direct support to families through publications, training, prison visitors' centres, outreach work and signposting to local support services. A grant towards their core costs will support he organisation and ensure they are able to undertake further work around supporting children, young people and families

750,000 children a year will witness domestic violence in the home. This abuse can have a devastating effect on the whole family. The survivor's confidence will have been shattered, the children's concentration at school may be effected and some may even develop the same destructive behaviour they have witnessed at home. ADFAM National works to combat many of these problems by providing training and resources to agencies working with effected families. With the right support, they are better able to rebuild their lives.

Alcohol Concern
Deaths from liver disease have risen sharply amongst people aged between 25 to 34 in the past decade. This is thought to be a consequence of young people consuming excessive amounts of alcohol at an earlier age. Alcohol Concern works with organisations and government to help ensure that young people across the country learn about the risks of excessive drinking. Through being informed, young people are able to make knowledgeable choices about their future and trends in drinking can be indentified that will help to inform future government policy around alcohol.

Anti-Slavery International
Human trafficking is an illegal but growing problem in the UK. A quarter of those trafficked are children who are forced into chronically abusive situations such as prostitution, criminal activity and organ removal. Anti-Slavery International works with the British government to ensure they are doing everything possible to crack down on the perpetrators, so that vulnerable young people get the care and protection they need.

Association of Young People with ME
An estimated 25,000 children and young people in the UK suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome, commonly known as ME. Symptoms can include extreme tiredness, physical pain and flu-like symptoms. Most of those diagnosed become housebound and are at greater risk of developing depression or other mental health problems. The Association of Young People with ME runs a friendship scheme for those who are severely affected by the illness. The 'buddies' build a relationship through e-mail, text and phone calls. The project is a vital service, helping young people with ME to feel connected to others, which is important for their recovery.

Bail for Immigration Detainees
Asylum-seeking women are often detained for long periods which adds to the trauma from the rape or torture they may have experienced in their own country. Yarlswood Detention Centre in Bedford holds a large number of women and Bail for Immigration Detainees runs workshops there about how to apply for bail. For women who have been raped or tortured this is their only opportunity to be released on bail.

CALM-Campaign Against Living Miserably
Although there is a high incidence of mental health problems and suicide in young men, they are amongst the hardest group to reach, as they find it difficult to talk about their feelings or ask for help. CALM runs a national web-chat and texting service giving young men a chance to communicate, so that they feel less alone and more likely to seek help.

Children and young people who have been trafficked into the UK are at serious risk of abuse, violence and sexual exploitation. Eaves Housing for Women is working on effective methods to stop the harmful cycle of poverty and trafficking in the Balkan states. Using their experience in film making and research they aim to educate young girls in the Balkan states about the risk of being trafficked into sexually abusive situations. The project will increase awareness and keep more young people safe from trafficking.

Young people are targeted by predatory men for sexual exploitation through prostitution. Streetwise focuses on the prevention of sexual exploitation of young people through workshops and an interactive web-site. Children and young people who have been trafficked into the UK are at serious risk of abuse, violence and sexual exploitation. End Child Prostitution Pornography and Trafficking (ECPAT) is funded to work with professionals in the travel industry, teaching them the tools to recognise when young people may be being trafficked and how to respond and ensure that they are helped.

Women who have been exploited through sex trafficking are extremely vulnerable, and often too scared to give evidence that could be used to convict their traffickers. Every year in the UK about 100,000 children run away from home or care, with one in six ending up on the streets.
